Tutorial: Share a collection of online videos
If you want to share a collection of videos, using a Silk site is a great way to do it. On a Silk site you can insert videos from sites like Youtube on a page, and add extra information like a review, other links, or images. The site will be easy to search and filter, no matter how large it grows.
This tutorial explains everything you need to do to build a Silk site that contains your collection of videos.
If you need any help, don't hesitate to drop us a line.
Step 1Create your Silk site
First of all, create a Silk site if you haven't done so already.
For example: myamazingvideos.silkapp.com
Step 2Add a collection and pages
Next you will be asked to create your first collection. This one is easy: 'Video' will be everything we need for now. Then, add a page for each video you want to have on your site.
Use your dashboard to quickly add pages to your collection
Step 3Creating your video pages
Next, we are going to fill your empty pages with a video and add extra information to them. Hit 'edit page' on your dashboard. On the page, hit the + icon and the 'Media' button. Insert the URL pointing to your video (we support Youtube, Vimeo, and many more video sites).
After that, add some extra information to the page. Silk has a special area where you can tag bits of text (we call it the fact sheet). See that 'add your first tag' button? Enter some bits of information that make sense for your video collection. For example, you can add the subject of your video, a small review, and a location. Take some time to figure out what you would like to include for each video. It will be worth it.
Step 4Insert some Silk magic
Initially, your homepage will show a list of pages from your video collection. You can spice up your homepage by adding tables, graphs, maps or other widgets. Tables can show and filter your videos based on any tag. Graphs and maps only work with tagged text that contains a number or location.
Go to your homepage and edit it, and hit the + icon on the spot where you want to add a table or other widget. You can edit the properties of the table in the edit screen that pops up.
Add a table with the + icon, choose which tags to show, and figure out how to sort the information
Step 5Spread the word and invite people to collaborate
You can invite anyone to join your Silk site. Hit the 'manage this site' button on your dashboard, and add a user. People who have a Silk account can also get a daily or weekly email update by hitting the 'follow' button on top of your home page.
This concludes our tutorial. We hope this clear up most questions you might have. If you want to use Silk for a video collection and still have questions, we would love to answer them. Don't hesitate to reach out. Other than that: good luck, we are curious to see what you'll come up with!
